Even in the last two months of the war the Germans continued with their ‘sink on sight’ campaign at sea, attacking any allied shipping they came across. The convoy system had greatly reduced the damage done but no vessel was absolutely safe. On 9th September, 1918, the Steamship Missanbie, a defensively-armed British Passenger Liner of the Canadian Pacific Line was torpedoed and sunk by German submarine UB-87 when 52 miles from Daunt Rock, Ireland. 45 lives were lost including that of 15 year old Douglas Marler, serving on board as a cadet. |
